The main highways

  • Philip Goldson Highway: north from Belize City via Orange Walk and Corozal to the Mexican border.
  • George Price Highway: west via the Belize Zoo, Belmopan and San Ignacio to the Guatemalan border at Benque Viejo.
  • Hummingbird Highway: from Belmopan through the Maya Mountains to Dangriga, the most scenic road in Belize.
  • Southern Highway: from near Dangriga to Punta Gorda, with turn-offs to Hopkins and Placencia.

The Coastal Road (Manatee Highway) is a shortcut from the George Price Highway to Dangriga, but it is unpaved and can be rough after rain.

Driving tips

  • Speed bumps ("sleeping policemen") slow traffic in every village; watch for signs.
  • Avoid driving at night: roads are unlit, and pedestrians, cyclists and animals use them.
  • Fuel stations are found in towns; fill up before remote trips such as Caracol.
