Visiting

Day trips from Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker and Belize City take about 2 to 3 hours each way by boat. Divers usually descend to about 40 metres along the wall, where stalactites hang from ledges formed when the cave was above sea level. Snorkellers stay at the rim. Trips normally add Half Moon Caye, with its booby colony, and a dive or snorkel on the atoll's reefs.

The hole is best appreciated from above: scenic flights from San Pedro and Belize City circle over it.

Good to know

Diving inside the hole requires experience; operators usually ask for an advanced certification. Crossings can be rough when the wind is up.
