What to do

Hopkins is a good place to experience Garifuna culture, with drumming lessons and dishes such as hudut, fish cooked in coconut broth with mashed plantain. The beach runs the length of the village.

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary protects the rainforest of the Cockscomb Range and was set up as the world's first jaguar reserve. Jaguars are rarely seen, but trails lead to waterfalls and swimming spots, and the birdlife is rich. The turn-off is at Maya Centre.

Getting there

Hopkins is about 3 hours by car from Belize City via the Hummingbird Highway, and about an hour from Placencia. Buses stop at the junction on the Southern Highway, about 6 km from the village.
